AMD with their Ryzen and Radeon RX series managed to re-captivate consumers because they were able to deliver a very good price-performance ratio.

Well, the presence of the Ryzen and Radeon RX also seems to make laptop manufacturers more enthusiastic. One unusual product is the ASUS ROG GL702ZC which was announced at the end of 2017. This laptop is staying up to have the same desktop performance.

If the laptop is usually more concerned with portability to be able to be carried anywhere, other things with the ROG GL702ZC which has a fairly large size. How not, this laptop uses a processor and graphics card commonly found on desktop computers to provide the highest possible performance.

Design

From the very first time I saw the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC I can feel that this laptop is very sturdy. The body uses the main plastic material, but ASUS provides a touch of aluminum that makes it look more premium. Don't miss the flaming ROG logo as a characteristic of the Strix series.

As a laptop belonging to the Republic of Gamers class, of course GL702ZC presents things that reflect the soul of a gamer. The keyboard has a 1.6 mm key travel with red backlit lights. Typing for a long time using this keyboard feels very comfortable.

The touchpad has a wide surface with red line accents around it. A smooth and responsive surface makes it difficult for me not to carry a mouse device.

Connectivity presented on the GL702ZC is also quite complete starting from the mini Display Port, HDMI, USB Type-C, USB 3.0, and headphone jack port on the right, while on the left there are two USB 3.0 and SD Card.

For a 17-inch laptop, the GL702ZC has a very large size with dimensions of 414 x 254 x 33 mm and weights reaching 3.2 Kg. The calculation does not include adapters which are also much larger than most existing laptops. This makes the GL702ZC quite difficult to use as a portable device everyday that has to be carried around.

Looking at the specifications that are also unusual for a laptop, the size is still understandable. Therefore the GL702ZC is more suitable to be referred to as a portable all-in-one desktop that doesn't move frequently so that those of you who intend to use it in public places such as lecture classes need to think again.

Screen and Audio

ASUS pinned a 17.3-inch IPS panel screen equipped with Freesync technology to eliminate screen tearing that often occurs when the screen's performance and capabilities are out of balance. The screen has also been coated with anti-glare and has a 75% NTSC color gain.

The image quality produced by the GL702ZC screen can I make sure it is very colorful, bright and sharp. Surely this will make you able to see every detail of the texture of the game characters more carefully and can see the difference in color gradation better. Guaranteed for you who also attach importance to image quality, you will not be disappointed with the GL702ZC screen.

About the audio, the GL702ZC speaker produces a thunderous sound, especially the bass that sounds very powerful. In low volume conditions, the sound still sounds quite clear while when high volumes will make you feel at home theater and can hear every type of sound that is there so that you can feel a better playing experience.

Even so, I don't like it because the bass level is higher than my taste, which prefers a little flat so I have to set it a little through the equalizer application. But for you to enjoy listening to music with powerful bass, you certainly won't be disappointed with the GL702ZC speakers.

Specifications and Benchmarks

ASUS doesn't seem to be kidding when it comes to presenting GL702ZC because the specifications it has are amazing. The processor uses AMD Ryzen 7 1700 which has 8 core 3.0 GHz speeds with Turbo Boost reaching 3.7 GHz. The performance produced by this 65 Watt TDP processor will be able to bulldoze all types of heavy applications even in multitasking.

This AMD Ryzen 7 1700 is included in a desktop class processor so you can enjoy performance that is very similar to a desktop computer in a laptop. To prove this, I immediately run the Cinebench R15 application that can simulate the capabilities of the processor.

As a result the test takes place very quickly even still in seconds. The score obtained is also very high for multi-core tests, which reaches 1413 cb. With a value that is so high, Ryzen 7 1700 is perfect for those of you who really need high-performance process devices such as rendering.

Along with a high-speed processor, the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC is also armed with a Radeon RX 580 graphics card which is a generation of Polaris 20 which is also very similar to its siblings in the desktop class. This graphics card has 4GB of GDDR5 memory to support the needs of modern 3D applications.

In addition to the fast graphics processor and card, the GL702ZC features 8GB DDR4 RAM with 256GB SSD capacity and 1TB HDD for today's application needs. By using these combinations, you can still experience the process of fast operating system performance and extensive storage capacity for personal data.

Intrigued by the performance of this laptop as a whole, I also carried out synthetic benchmarks to simulate activities commonly carried out by ordinary users. The ROG GL70ZC is capable of celebrating 5054 values   on PCMark 8 and 4702 on PCMark 10. Both benchmarks are done in Office mode.

Next I tried running the 3DMark benchmark application to see the performance that can be expected when playing games using the ROG GL70ZC. The result is certainly not surprising to see the value of the previous benchmark, this ASUS gaming laptop gets a value of 3342 for Time Spy.

This value is quite good considering Time Spy is classified as very heavy and not many laptops can run it smoothly enough. For a slightly lighter mode, the ASUS ROG GL70ZC scores 8838.

Gaming

Seeing all the benchmark results from the ASUS ROG Strix GL70ZC makes me even more curious to try to play the latest AAA heavy games. There are several titles that I play starting from Assassin's Creed Origin to PES 2018 which represent different needs of each game.

The first test I tried to run the latest AAA game, namely Assassin's Creed Origin and Battlefield 1 which have very realistic graphics. One thing that I can immediately feel when playing in both titles is that the game runs very smoothly and there is no lag or screen tearing due to the existing Freesync technology.

ASUS GL70ZC is able to run Assassin's Creed Origin with an average of 40-45 FPS with a slight decrease of up to 30 FPS in some scenes while Battlefield 1 is fairly stable at 60FPS. Interestingly, I use the highest Ultra Graphic preset in both games. This is proof of the strength of the combination of Ryzen 7 1700 and Radeon RX 580.

The next game that I play is The Witcher 3, Rise of Tomb Raider, and Grand Theft Auto V which is a very popular game with stunning graphics quality at launch. These games have been released for several years so that they are suitable as a general reference for most games.

The results obtained are certainly not surprising because the ROG GL70ZC is able to run the entire game very well in the highest graphic quality even with some slight regret. The average FPS value is around 30-40 for The Witcher 3, then 40-45 FPS for Rise of Tomb Raider and around 45-60 FPS for GTA V.

From these results it can be seen that the ROG GL70ZC has a weakness when playing games that have NVIDIA's Gameworks graphics settings and are a bit overwhelmed when I activate MSAA more than 2x. For me personally this is not too influential because using the highest presets is enough to be able to play immersive.

The last game test I did was Tekken 7 to represent the fighting game and Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 represents a sports game. Because this game is not too heavy, I immediately use the graphics settings as much as possible. As a result, both games can run without problems at 60 FPS stably in all scenes.

After feeling the performance right away, I was quite amazed at the ability of the ROG GL702ZC because I could experience playing like a desktop computer in the form of a laptop. The ROG GL702ZC will be able to run whatever you give it, be it the latest heavy game or content creator like video editing.

During playing even the laptop surface does not feel too hot thanks to the air vents that are large enough on the back and I check using HW Monitor the average temperature when full load can reach almost 90 ° C while idle around 50 ° C. Therefore, do not ever try to block it by hand because it is quite hot.

One thing you might need to know is the noise level. When idle or using a lightweight application it does not sound anything at all, but once you try heavy activities such as playing games with high graphics, get ready to listen to the sound of the jet airplane issued by the fan.

Battery

This segment is probably the only one I can point to as the main drawback of the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC, which is the durability of the battery. For a laptop that has a large enough size, the battery endurance is quite disappointing to use as a portable device.

In ordinary daily use, this laptop can only last for approximately 1 hour while when used to play games can be slightly below that. This is actually understandable considering the specifications used are desktop classes. The processor only has 65 Watt TDP, far greater than the average laptop processor in general which is only 15 Watts.

To charge your own battery for about 1 hour 20 minutes using a default charger that is also larger in general. Even so, in my opinion this is not a big problem because I guarantee the owner of the ASUS ROG GL702ZC will always connect it to a power source to get maximum performance.

The battery that can last for 1 hour can be considered as a backup power if the main power source suddenly breaks down like a light switch so you still have time to finish the job and save data more safely.

Conclusion

After trying it in a few weeks I can say that the ASUS ROG GL702ZC is one of the most comfortable laptops I've ever used. Starting from the design, keyboard, touchpad, the performance provided, until the type of connectivity provided makes me feel at home using it every day.

One of the main things that are taken into consideration is of course the larger size of the laptop in general. This makes the ROG GL702ZC more suitable for you requiring a device as class as a workstation but can be carried away to replace the main computer at home. Plus this laptop is quite noisy when used full load so it will definitely disturb people around.

The durability of the battery also cannot be too reliable for users who are often outdoors or rarely find power outlets. Therefore this laptop is not suitable for use by users who want to use it in public places.

However, these shortcomings are covered with a very high performance resembling a desktop computer. The ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC combines Ryzen 7 1700 which has 8 cores with the Radeon RX 580 with 4GB of memory to produce high performance especially for multitasking.

The 17.3-inch screen offered also provides clear and colorful image quality and audio that will make your multimedia experience more leverage. Laptop seems to be presented for AMD fans who want desktop performance in laptop-shaped devices.

Finally, the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC is intended for those of you who have high productivity and don't want to compromise on performance such as playing AAA games or video editing. With this one laptop you don't need to worry about the name lack of resources when running heavy programs that are often used by professionals.
